OMRI Horticultural Pumice

Price range: $25.00 through $40.00

Our OMRI Listed Horticultural Pumice is considered a superior gardening amendment due to its highly porous, lightweight volcanic structure, which provides unmatched soil aeration, excellent drainage, and moisture regulation without breaking down. Unlike perlite, it does not float to the surface, and it is more durable and water-retentive than lava rock.
Key benefits of pumice for gardening include:
  • Superior Aeration & Drainage: Its porous, air-filled structure prevents soil compaction, ensuring roots get enough oxygen while preventing waterlogged roots that lead to rot.
  • Moisture & Nutrient Retention: It acts like a microscopic sponge, holding onto water and nutrients and releasing them slowly, which can reduce watering needs.
  • Structural Stability: It does not break down, decompose, or degrade, providing long-lasting soil structure for years.
  • Prevents Compaction: Unlike other materials that may degrade over time, its light, rigid nature prevents heavy soils from compacting.
  • Ideal for Succulents & Cacti: It is highly recommended for succulents , bonsai and cacti because it provides the perfect balance of drainage and moisture retention.
  • Ideal for improving heavy clay soils: in Oklahoma , Texas , New Mexico , Arizona.
  • Neutral pH: It does not affect the pH level of the soil.
  • Functional Mulch: It makes a great top-layer mulch, as it is heavy enough not to blow away, manages soil temperature, and keeps the surface dry, which can help control gnats.

How to Use Horticultural Pumice:

For most succulents and cacti, we recommend a mix of  60% pumice, 40% organic potting soil. For specialized Bonsai training, we recommend 33% pumice, 33% Organic soil, 33% Akadama for maximum drainage and root control. You can view our other cactus supplies and plants here on our main shop page. This product is officially OMRI Listed for use in certified organic operations, ensuring the highest safety standards for your food and hobby plants. Because it is a natural volcanic glass, it provides a grit that discourages soil pests while maintaining a neutral pH for your delicate root systems.
